RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Be with me, O Lord, in my distress.

IMPULSES FOR PRAYER: Ps 24;   Mt 4:1-11;   Mk 1:12-15

MEDITATION:
In the wilderness, Jesus endures the temptations of the devil. The three temptations are toward riches, glory and power, represented by bread, rule and defiance of nature. Jesus defends against and indeed refutes the evil one with a string of quotes from the book of Deuteronomy. Although the devil plays a central role in this story, it is God who is in control. It is not just one more attempt by the devil to undo God’s work; it is an integral part of the mission of Jesus, who is to confront and destroy the powers of evil.
